Thursday, November 21st - Walnut Beach Art Stroll : A prelude to the Holiday Season

The Holidays are fasting approaching! And what better way than to enjoy a prelude to the Holidays as they do sneak upon us. . . . Starts at 6:00 pm at Firehouse Gallery, 81 Naugatuck Avenue with an opening reception of its final exhibit “Non-Themed” (anything goes) for the 2013 Season. You will see artworks submitted by local artists that will be judged by one of our own local artists, Rick Senft. Cash prizes are awarded for first, second and third place being announced at 6:45 pm. 

Meander on down the Avenue to Sobobo, 42 Naugatuck Avenue and meet November’s Artist, Patricia Brundage, photographer who captures that moment in time. You will also find artwork by local artists, Judy Ruskin, Ed Steinerts, Sheila Pite, Harold Davis, Mariana Furtney, Allan Dudek and more as well as jewelers Carlyne Labrecque, Sam Rawls, William Ahern, Claudio Altesor, Sally Ann Endelman, Laise and Anilese.  All artwork is available for purchase.  

Walnut Beach Creamery will be having samples of their gourmet ice cream for you to decide which one would be best for your Holiday Party, and dinners! Pick up an order form to place your order of your favorite flavor!

Stop at Seaside Wine and Spirits, 38 Naugatuck Avenue, taste the “spirits” of the Holidays. You can order your favorite too!

Continue on to Beach Gallery, 2 Broadway, where you will find a young newcomer, photographer, Christopher Haley whose surreal works reminds you of Dali. Enjoy listening to Christopher’s sounds as he plays acoustic guitar. Should you find that one interesting image of his to purchase you will receive a cd of accompanied music! Visit, listen and enjoy! 

Scoot and Paddle, 28 Naugatuck Avenue, will be open where you can make an off-season reservation to kayak, ride a bike and more. Gift certificates are on sale for that active person you may know!

Head down Broadway to Wild Expressions, 16 Broadway, to find Jennifer Harkey owner Creativimpulse. She melts glass from recycled wine, gin and vodka bottles shaping and transforming the melted glass into jewelry and decorative art pieces - Truly Amazing! A must see!  And there is more - you will hear Tom Ferrara – The Captain Rocks! play his tunes as you warm your belly on this cold night sampling the Chili Contest entries! Smashing Worlds takes us on a different ride...it can be through the city or even a small town....you decide where you are as you view their art on brick walls!

April's Artist, Beth Pite Takes Us On A Walk To Remember...

"My art is about color, energy and capturing the essence of something rather than an exact likeness. My paintings often suggest a vignette, a human story in intriguing settings like paths through trees, festivals, cityscapes, or boats in the setting sun. Using loose, gestural strokes of vibrant color, I want to show how it felt to be there, instead of just copying what my camera records.

Pastel painting is done with buttery, soft pastel sticks of pure pigment, rather than a brush. The immediacy of applying pastels directly to the surface of the painting helps convey the intensity of my experiences. Multiple layers of color take advantage of the pastel medium's ability to refract light, building rich dark and light areas without using dull black, white or brown. Instead, I play contrasting colors against each other to create vibrant energy.

Inspired by New England scenery or my travels in Europe and Latin America, I use my photographs to soak up a sense of the place. This helps me remember what was exciting about it when I later paint it in vivid, expressionistic color using energetic strokes. By favoring color, form and movement over exact representations of my subjects, I aim for an enhanced reality that lets viewers enjoy a more emotional response."

Beth's ability to enhance reality by creating vibrant energy using colors of the spectrum gives the viewer a jolt of electricity. The current connects creating a realm where you become absorbed into a particular time and space. This energy can be felt throughout your inner being down to your fingertips, your nerve endings begin to tingle, becoming alive.

Do you realize at times when you look at a tree, or look at others walking, or looking at a building it all becomes brighter in color, the vibrance of each shade and tint seems to permeate through the solidness of the subjects? You can even see waves emit from each subject, similar to the waves of heat you see rising off of a road on a hot summer day, this is energy. You can even feel it as you pass, your body absorbing it. Beth captures that. She captures it, the energy, in each pastel she uses as she paints. She has that uncanny ability to harness the energy to bring each painting to life hoping that each person who views her work will be able to feel it.

The best way to explain it is to envision Beth capturing electricity through a kite, kite string and a key in a jar....Now, put pastels in her hand, a canvas in front of her and watch the electricity, the energy connect between her and her palette, her canvas. Beth is that conduit between what some cannot see and helps all to see the energy "matter" in the world around us.

Each pastel painting depicts her ability. Her subject "matter" is electricity...her subject "matter" is the energy...her subject "matter" is more than scientific matter...her subject "matter" becomes emotional...her subject "matter" becomes the spiritual side of the science of "matter."

To be able to feel that current of electricity, to see the waves of energy emit from each painting, to enjoy the color and beauty of each subject "matter" you must visit SoBoBo. Starts at 6:00 pm that evening at Firehouse Gallery, 81 Naugatuck Avenue....with an opening reception celebrating a new exhibit and the last one for 2011~ they will re-open in 2012!...

Meander down Naugatuck to SoBoBo and meet with Rick Senft who is November's Artist and Joyce Densmore who is November's Artisan! Both creative works leave you thinking about how they would look in your home and how they would look on you! (respectively that is)

Also at SoBoBo Kitty Olsen and Mary Anne Lagana, both are fibre artists...try on their scarves, there are styles to suit the winter or for an evening out perhaps New Year's Eve! Warren Bryant brings a new abstract side to art, Matt Roe as usual brings contemporary and modern art to a new level, Matt Hester, Angelina Scott and Kimberly Pisco - photography to a new level. Arlene Capozzi brings nastalgia back with her paintings of Savin Rock and Walnut Beach amusement parks, while William Gallagher hand carved Santas. Stephen Fortier, a wood turner, designed an array of bowls from reclaimed wood! Besides jeweler Joyce Densmore we have Analiese, Sam, Lara, Teru, Patti, Carlyne and Keelin...a beautiful array of adornments!

We have a surprise at SoBoBo --- Alfa's Jolly Jug will be hosting a wine tasting at the Gallery! There is going to be some very interesting flavors....and what a way to find that fine wine or liquer for the Holidays!

Art Stroll is Happening! Thursday, October 6th.....

Autumn has fast approached us. The trees are just starting to change their color, but with all of the rain and heat we had so late into the summer, you wonder if they are going to change at all...but you know what ...October's Art Stroll will be happening on Thursday, October 6th.

Enjoy an evening around Walnut Beach area via horse and buggy! Patti Clark (artisan of SoBoBo) and her husband of Maple View Farms, Orange, CT will be joining us that evening...WEATHER PERMITTING that is...if it rains, the rides won't be taking place.

But you know the route, just head to FIRE HOUSE GALLERY, 81 Naugatuck Avenue and see the four seasons change before your eyes! Their new exhibit is "Four Seasons" and the opening reception begins at 6:00 pm. A juried show so awards will be given...don't forget to choose People's Choice Award!

Meander down to SOBOBO and check out October's Artist, Elizabeth B. Wright's exhibit. The vibrancy of her work, the energies, a breath of fresh air you feel is stunning. Besides Elizabeth, we have new artists Warren Bryant, Simone Doroski, Kimberly Pisco, and Karen Macker...new artisan, a wood turner - Steven Fortier. Steven works in reclaimed wood only! The wood carvers, Bill Gallagher has returned with his Santa Clauses all hand carved out of bass wood as well as William Brill. The intricacy of each stroke in the wood is amazing. We have jewelers, Sam Rawls, Patti Clark, Carlyne LeBreque, Simone Doroski, Analiese, Lara, Susan Frey, and Teru Rexroad, Keelin Brett....SO MUCH TO SEE, SO MUCH TO CHOOSE FROM TO GIVE AS HOLIDAY GIFTS, even birthdays, anniversaries, new home...

When you leave make sure to stop in ALFA'S JOLLY JUG at 38 Naugatuck Avenue...start stocking up for the holidays! They may even have something for you to taste...and perhaps you will add it to your favorites...

Don't know if LAZY LOBSTER will be open since it is the end of the summer season...but check them out anyway...

PAINTED YOU is a wonderful place to stop at...see the beauty in the work...no it is not tatoos, it is body painting, very different...there is also the possibility of making arrangements for face painting at an upcoming event you may have....

WILD EXPRESSIONS, oh the scents that envelope you as you enter... the floral art that Tyyne Catapano designed...EXQUISITE!!..maybe musician Tim Payson will be on hand to play his wonderful sounds...

COLLECTED STORIES, of course has that book or books you couldn't find elsewhere...think about the Holidays!

And last but not least stop at WALNUT BEACH CREAMERY....they will be closing for the season on Halloween - October 31st (and will re-open next Spring)....which means the Walnut Beach Witch will be arriving soon!

So much to do and have fun in the mean time....think about the Holiday Season, as it, too, is fast approaching...house warming gifts, hostess gifts, Christmas gifts, Kwanzaa gifts, and Hannukah gifts...

August's Surprise!

Surprise, Surprise, Surprise! We can't have a month go by without an art stroll! Thursday, August 11th will be one of surprise and wonderment - an added genre of art -- poetry!



Visit Firehouse Gallery and see the exhibit "From the Sea." Enjoy as you "swim" from piece to piece, becoming part of it. Meander down, maybe stop off at Alfa's and have pizza...

Next stop -- SoBoBo, where August's Artist, Joanne Watkins is showing a "third" world through a "third" eye. You step into each photo feeling the energy of life that was taking place at that one moment in time.

Poets D'Antonia and Sara Eliza Johnson will be exhibiting their writings. Both are amazing, their writings leave you breathless! Take a peek below...

D’Antonia is adjunct professor teaching at Quinnipiac, Yale, and Southern Connecticut State University. She is an accomplished poet and photographer, who after a ten year hiatus has come home to hone her passions. Her work has been published in Verdad Magazine, El Ojito, American Poetry Anthology, Beanfeast Magazine, and includes a self published poetry compilation, entitled, “No One To Blame But Yourself. “ Several of her poems have also appeared on-line.
D’Antonia is working on a book of poems and is the CEO of two internet businesses, currently scheduled to go live in January 2012—stay tuned…; excerpt:

Sara Eliza Johnson whose poetry has appeared in a variety of places online and in print, including the New England Review, Shenandoah, Iron Horse Literary Review, and Best New Poets 2009. She is the recipient of a Rona Jaffe Foundation Writer's Award, a Winter Fellowship from the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, a work-study scholarship to the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference, and an AWP Intro Journals Project Award. She holds a BA from Cornell University and an MFA from the University of Oregon.

Meet Photographer Pam Landry as Wild Expressions is exhibiting her work. You must see her fine art. Pam, born on the shoreline in New Rochelle, New York and now living on the shoreline in Milford, Connecticut, one of Pam’s favorite photo subjects has always been anything beach related.
