Liber Art Begins the New Year...

Benjamin Casiano, a man of strong stature, enlightens us with fluidness in his works that extends outward reaching, touching each of us. One cannot walk-by without looking, you stop, turn and gaze. A remarkable ability to attract. That in itself explains who Benjamin is...

Benjamin Casiano, attracting, gathering creating once again, but this time a group of five artists, Liber Art. As a group their work flows, connecting creating an energy that abounds. Feeling its pulse you become one with the creations.

Individually, each artist is just amazing; from spiritual a connection with Universe, to florals a connection to Earth, from humans and structures to the abstract a psyche of human form.

Claudio Altesor, the spiritual - a connection with Universe, states it quite eloquently "I paint what I can't see, but I firmly believe in its existence. I create a vision that takes place in the land of surrealism and social realism, overturning the ideas that formant in my mind about existential issues. I think realty is much more profound than what we can see, and this is precisely what I paint. My goal is that the observer interact with the painting, taking the main object and connecting them with their surroundings; where each part represents a fragment of the paintings idea. These paintings invite thought and imagination."

When looking at "Meditation" it is profound in itself. Seeing is believing perhaps? The unilateral connection we all have becomes universal; becoming intertwined, connected through all realms seen or not seen; but yet Claudio, the spiritual, the unseen energies brings what we call surreal to the real world so we claim "seeing is believing" - the faith we always had in the unseen, believing if we "tap" into it the "Law of Attraction" will apply and our Faith becomes tangible, we can touch it and embrace it feeling its energies embracing us in return.

"Meditation" - mixed media - by Claudio Altesor

"Law of Attraction" is the key: Benjamin Casiano, the gatherer and creator is more to the point about how it works for him: "After so may years as an art director, graphic designer and even a creative director, I felt the need to turn a new leaf. I reinvented myself and followed what I have been doing all along. I found the one thing that was missing in my life; substitution of a keyboard for a paintbrush was the best decision I have ever made. I found wealth not measured in numbers but rather a joy and happiness unseen in most of my work experience. Being a professional artist allows me the privilege to endeavor a direct role, contributing to our modern society and American culture. Something I hope to be doing years to come."

Benjamin's professional career was based on design and art to attract consumers, attention getter works and without realizing it it is his own ability as an individual, as a person. Many don't see this quality in him, and it is seen he himself might not realize it either. His own desire to change, at least that is what he thought, by "becoming an artist" to capture people's attention through his work, to see the pure joy and happiness he experiences in others is what brings the two together.

Looking at "Pink Sunset" it is as if you are looking out a window; you are there, you can feel the sun's warmth come through the window and it slowly becoming cooler, chillier as it (the sun) escapes slowly below the horizon.

"Pink Sunset" - acrylics - by Benjamin Casiano

Seeing "Salsa" you can feel the movement of the couple gliding across the floor around the room, you can feel the emotion the two have, their senses melding together creating the elegant movement without flaw. You are attracted to it!

"Salsa" - mixed media - by Benjamin Casiano

You find yourself wrapped up in it, you become one with it: you are woman, you feel the embrace of your male partner pulling you close you automatically are in unison - feeling your strength and control becomes one with his; you are man, you feel your female partner fall into you both of your strengths and control creating "one single being" moving across the floor with ease, both breathing in unison, both experiencing the feeling of being free yet you are not. How exhilarating!

Florals experiencing movement, freedom knowing no bounds but yet connected to Earth, Rosa Colon understanding the fluidness of life and its attraction through creation is rather amazing: "I like to capture significant moments from my life and my background. I am fascinated with nature, its outside forms, shape and vibrant color. I deeply believe that in nature we find a lot of inspiration. That is my case, I pick and process different kind of flowers and leaves from my garden and my friends' gardens. I use them for my artworks, first of all because they are an organic material and secondly I don't have to use additive colors or other substances to enhance its colors. Sometimes I use watercolor, acrylic or pastels for the background only.  My designs usually are simple and other they are complex and through them I try to conserve the nature's grandeur for the future generations."

When looking at "Bamboo Forest" you can't help reach out to touch it. Bamboo grows quite quickly you know...it is a wonderment in itself and Rosa captured its energy you are attracted to it, you have to catch yourself before you trip over the frame falling into the forest being enveloped by itself grandeur.

"Bamboo Forest" - oils - by Rosa Colon

Walking by "Pink Lotus" you can see it "floating" on the water, yet it is connected through the depths of the pond to its bottom its "connection" for life, the softness of the petals, its elegant poise proudly radiant.

"Pink Lotus" - oils - by Rosa Colon

Attracting you to look at her as "Bamboo Forest" attracted you to step over the frame and enter the forest, stepping onto the forest floor, it becoming tangible, real.

The tangible, the human and structure Hernan Restrepo brings it all to life: "I'm highly interested in all aspects of visual communication. My love for painting started in my early adolescence, and all throughout this time, painting has never ceased its power over me."

We talk about the "cookie cutter" houses that are popping up all around us; however Hernan's capture of architecture, the structures of the porticoes, porches, decks, balconies becomes the life of the hardness of each building. He captures the strength and its rigidity and at the same time shows the life of the structure, its soul that attracts us to look up to see what is taking place. Balconies are the attraction for souls, Life, whatever action or inaction is taking place - a morning cup of coffee and a yawn perhaps a call out to the rising sun, the dawn of a new day;

"Untitled" - by Hernan Restrepo

"Untitled" by Hernan Restrepo

sitting in the corner on a chair, a yoga position finding serenity a time to meditate to take pause and escape from reality, the tangible the human surroundings, the structure seeking and delving into our own psyche.

Sandra Rossini - the abstract a psyche of human form is poignant to our innerself: "In my work, my main focus is in the color patterns in an effort to invoke emotion and/or metaphorical symbols. The colors should project not only my emotions as the artist but also as an effort to be a reflection of the viewers reaction back onto the painting. My main inspiration has been the female figure and representation of femininity. This is established not only through the main focal point but in the brightness of the colors chosen. I enjoy working with sharp angles, repetition of shapes, and the rounded figures in my female subjects incorporating musical instruments to echo femininity and the many shades it carries. My paintings are a mixture of quick anxious taps to short flowing brushstrokes. I like my pieces to be light, colorful and happy but at same time adding the darker shades to contrast the warm colors as a grounding effort on the painting. The characters in my paintings are at times not as easily to catch, in an effort to persuade the viewer to look deeper into the piece. I am a believer in simplicity and beauty, light and fluffy. I allow the true meaning of my paintings to reach the viewer through a pseudo-happy bridge in order to lure them deeper into the metaphorical, political, emotional thinking behind it."

A woman's psyche is very mysterious and almost taboo to try to delve into...but Sandra's works allows a glimpse into what it is, but not too transparent. Looking at "8 am Saturday" shows us a convoluted woman, perhaps with so much activity the transparency becomes not the focus. A sense of urgency and a sense of complacency, and yet a sense of commitment, trust and self-assuredness. The vibrancy of color shows the energies, the life force that can be felt when you look to see what it is that attracted you to it.

"8 am Saturday" - oils - by Sandra Rossini

And then when viewing "Cocoon", you can feel the vulnerability, the sense of loss and at the same time being wrapped, enveloped in warmth creating the change, evolving into a new being a life changing affect - the subtly of the color invigorates the mind to seek the new, a refreshing outlook on what is to come.

"Cocoon" - mixed media - by Sandra Rossini

Sandra's ability to express what can be perceived all at once enhances the viewers' eye to look beyond and give back to herself/himself something that wasn't realized. Some may not appreciate the "design" while others can say "Oh, it says exactly what I am feeling, what I have felt" for the woman's psyche is very mysterious, a taboo that is so magnetic people are attracted to, whether it is in a creation as Sandra's or a discussion, a poem, a novel...woman's transparency isn't all that transparent...but yet

"The Law of Attraction" is the connectedness to everything...

Get connected, and see the attraction of Liber Art...for they will be exhibiting at SoBoBo Gallery for the month of January 2013. An exhilarating experience, the energies, the life force, feel its pulse and get connected becoming one with their creations....

"Following the Sun Over Charles Island" : Hedi Minow-Pike, December's Artist

"I am instinctively drawn to nature. Nature fascinates me as it never stands still. There is something new to see every day. The ever changing colors of the trees, sky, sun and water have been the inspiration for my photography.  Ten years ago, my husband and I bought a condo on Walnut Beach and a new adventure began.  I noticed how beautiful the sunrises over Charles Island were and could not resist the urge to get up early in the morning to photograph them.  I am not an early riser and in June it was getting up around five o’clock!

To quote the Greek Philosopher Heraclitus “The sun is new each day”; it has a profound affect how we see our surroundings.   In this exhibit, I present a sequence of photographs for each month of the year depicting sunrises over Charles Island as well as dawn and dusk.   The area photographed is the same, but what we see changes from day to day.  The position of the sun is different as we travel in time, the sky colors are never the same, and there is the low tide and high tide, stormy and calm waters and much more.   Some days are more beautiful than others, but there always is something so very fascinating about each brand new day even in our own backyard."

-- Hedi Minow-Pike

"February's Sunrise" - photograph - by Hedi Minow-Pike

Hedi's beautiful perception on how Earth shows herself to us is very poignant during this time as we climb up and out of the rubble left in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. She captures what resonates within each of us that a slight gasp can be heard. Not manipulating her images, she holds that true one moment in time of beauty that can be lost in the blink of an eye as Earth rotates, revolving around Sun.

So who truly is the center of the universe? In retrospect, it is hoped that we see Earth as the center of our universe; for she gives of herself every second of every minute of every hour of every day. She bears fruits and vegetables for us to eat; she grows trees to help us breathe which is a fascinating way of giving and receiving because trees give off oxygen that we need to breathe and we dispel carbon dioxide which trees and plants need to breathe. Of trees, we also receive wood to build structures to protect ourselves. Earth also houses animals who give us food to sustain our lives....we must think again when we become a bit narcissist and think we are the center of the universe when in actuality we are not.

Hedi's photography brings us back to reality with a "Hey, take the
time to stop and smell the roses; or the coffee" because it does depend where you are but the meaning is the same.

"August Sun" - photograph - by Hedi Minow-Pike

"...ever changing..." the key words that are synonymous to our lives. Sometimes we need to be shaken up a bit to make us move; to create something; to see that it is time to change; or it is time to help, or it is time to ask for help because our pride gets in the way. So, Earth will do this for us if we don't pay attention. The wake-up calls to our life's situations.

We are awakened each morning to the sounds of an alarm; music; talk shows; the sounds of the garbage truck. Some of us prefer to hear the sounds of birds, dogs barking, the whinnying of horses and their hooves hitting the pavement as they are brought to pasture each morning. Or, perhaps wind, rain and the uncanny silence when it is snowing. We all have our vices that shake us with a wake-up call each morning; however, Hedi's ability to capture it helps us to see something we might have missed.

Earth's recent destruction left in the "wake" from "Sandy" is a "wake"-up call for us; it is time for us to unite to help heal those affected by her, to rebuild communities, and to perhaps take a moment to see why it happened and what causes created it. We will find it is time to heal Earth before the sickness that has enveloped her gets worse.

Hedi Minow-Pike's poignant photographs remind us that as we seek aid in every aspect of our lives to heal and rebuild, let us seek aid for Earth because if we don't Hedi's photographs will be all that is left of Earth to remember her by.

Hedi's Opening Reception will be on Thursday, December 13th from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Join us! Take a break from the craziness and enjoy the most wonderful time of the year as we will celebrate with food, music, and dancing!

In Flander’s Fields
by
Lt. Col. John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies grow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Today is Veteran's Day. A day of honor for our men and women who not only fought in wars fighting for Democracy but to honor ALL military personnel within the five branches: Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines and Navy, and we mustn't forget our National Guard who on a daily basis, 24/7 help with the operations of the force that protects us and the world from harm. If it weren't for them we can only imagine what our lives would be like.

In the years immediately following World War I and only up until recently, governments and the whole of society, had not accepted the responsibility for those incapacitated and bereft as a result of war. This day marks the realization of what they, retired or disabled veterans have done and even those who are active duty continuing to do for us. It seems we forget our troops are there, the past and what they did for us but it is not true. It is not out of disrespect or selfishness or taking them for granted it is because they are our resolve just knowing and understanding they are there at all times that we can go about our daily lives.

In November 1918, Moina Michael, saw how the men and women were forgotten and the difficulties they endured when coming home. She read the poem "In Flander's Field" by Lt. Col. John McCrae. She being so moved by it had responded to him:

We Shall Keep the Faith

Oh! you who sleep in Flanders Fields,
Sleep sweet - to rise anew!
We caught the torch you threw
And holding high, we keep the Faith
With All who died.
We cherish, too, the poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led;
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies,
But lends a lustre to the red
Of the flower that blooms above the dead
In Flanders Fields.
And now the Torch and Poppy Red
We wear in honor of our dead.
Fear not that ye have died for naught;
We'll teach the lesson that ye wrought
In Flanders Fields.

Today, many have heard the story and it is legend now that the battle field at Flander was so soaked in blood from the soldiers who died there, not just U.S. but allied soldiers as well; Earth absorbed their blood and the following year red poppies had grown in the field.

Although the poem "In Flander's Field" never stated the color of the poppy, Moina Michael designed the red poppy representing the blood lost and the task at hand helping veterans return to society. Creating fund raisers and selling the poppies that were hand- made she gathered the proceeds to be used to help the veterans and their families. She felt it was the least she could do. Promoting to anyone who would listen. They should not be forgotten!

So one can see the importance for us to reflect on their courage, their strength, their ability to stay united defending us so we may go about our daily lives.

Let us take this time to thank each veteran for their service, including our active duty military. Thank them for being our silent strength, our resolve giving us the unequivocal feelings of safety, security, and the sense of knowing we and our rights as individuals are protected.

As we rally around those in need during and after a disaster do not forget the National Guard and Coast Guard and local first responders who were "deployed" to serve us during the recent storms; we need to rally around our veterans as well, welcoming them back and accepting them into our society.

Thank You!

Lisa Salerno "Paperdolls" Unfolds...

"The "paperdolls" series unfolded quite by accident, or perhaps it was by luck? I discovered a dissonant joy and longing in the repeating nameless-faceless forms of the vaguely female shapes I cut while playing with my daughter. While my initial intent was to entertain my little girl with these fun and innocent cutouts, I found myself imagining a story and character for each strand of figures. The repetitive patterns that unfolded reminded me of the ways in which our society so often ascribes stereotypes for each woman, ones that we impose upon ourselves, and ones that are imposed upon us.

As the ambiguity of each doll shape faded away when paper, paint, canvas, and pen combined, the narratives of each painting emerged, so too did their titles. One-worded but with double meaning, each painting is named in a manner reflective of the way in which each work investigates the female experience, sometimes playfully, sometimes flippantly, sometimes defiantly. Some of the smaller studies I have created so far include paper dolls in a snowflake pattern titled "flake", a piece crafted from a cut-up old artist statement titled "making a statement", a painting with a gold paper doll in the center titled "golddigger", and a piece titled "hotmess".

The short, unpunctuated titles are reflective of our modern, interconnected, high-speed culture, yet the imagery seeks to pay homage to traditional women's handicrafts, with folk art inspired quilt-like patterns. The various colors, iconography, symmetry, and interplay between negative and positive space, combine in an attempt to explore the contradictions and complexity of the modern female experience."

--Lisa Salerno

Lisa's "paperdolls" bring you back to childhood cutting paper, forming the connected figures; and the flat "cardboard" dolls that came in a book with her clothes ready to cut out so you can dress her in any style you wanted not even realizing the stereo-typing that we as young girls, adolescents were being indoctrinated into; a world, society that women were seen and not heard. Lisa's "Silenced" puts this into perspective quite perfectly, because even today, it still does take place.

mixed media by Lisa Salerno

Trying to change the way women are perceived to be is very difficult especially the climate of politics where women's rights are slowly being chipped away. Lisa's "Mary-Go-Round" is the epitome of what one anti-woman commentator portrays her to be.

by Lisa Salerno

And we mustn't forget the woman who seeks to be wealthy, who seeks companionship of the same quality in a man...for she is called "Golddigger" for her desires. But for a man to do the same it is allowed.

by Lisa Salerno

Lisa states it quite eloquently when she says "The short, unpunctuated titles are reflective of our modern, interconnected, high-speed culture...yet the imagery seeks to pay homage to the traditional women's handicrafts....an attempt to explore the contradictions and complexity of the modern female experience."

She has "pinned" the iconic paperdoll quite appropriately with what woman's culture is about and the struggles she endures on a daily basis not just here in the United States but around the world. In her description of the "traditional woman" it can be seen as a cynical but very poignant statement because it does put into perspective of how woman is perceived as a piece of furniture, to be used and abused and when done throw it away.

"Paperdolls" an innocent art project for anyone to create, but once you visit SoBoBo and see "Paperdolls" series you may walk away with a very different point of view. And each time you start cutting out "paperdolls" you will be reminded of the indoctrination young girls, adolescents and teenagers are experiencing even today in some parts of the world.

Lisa Salerno will be exhibiting "Paperdolls" from November 1st to November 30th at SoBoBo, 42 Naugatuck Avenue, Milford, CT. We hope you do visit us on Thursday, November 8th. Lisa's opening reception begins at 7:00 pm.

We ask that you stop at Firehouse Gallery too, for their opening reception on November 8th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Visit Wild Expressions who will be having singer/songwriter Kayte Devlin! Stop in Seaside Wines & Spirits for that holiday wine you were thinking about for Thanksgiving!

Please do join us at Firehouse Gallery, SoBoBo, and Wild Expressions for an evening of warmth, well wishes and enjoy a moment of peace after what has happened. Sometimes taking that moment away from the madness can help put a clearer picture on what should be done next - all of you are in our thoughts...

Warmth for your heart & soul....

“I work at the crossroads of art, photography and digital imaging. I find my inspiration from the natural world and capture it through photography.

I often begin with organic pictures taken from natural settings that I find compelling. I collect “pieces of the world” and compose them to tell a story. In my artwork, I imitate the way that a flower grows organized and purposeful.”

Marilyn Cocking Envelopes Us in Warmth

"Remembering, when I was small, a quilt on my grandmother's bed called "flower garden" and I knew I had to sleep on it, but couldn't." I became a sewer, a knitter, a crocheter creating with fiber from fabric to yarn.  The colors in fabric patterns become the palette of my piece. It is not just one color like a painter would use, it is a multitude of color that bounces off each other, that balances each other coming together creating a quilt.

I am a utilitarian quilter meaning my quilted pieces are to be used over and over again and are by no means museum quality. I want my quilts to be used. Although the quilts look to be traditional the diverse quilting patterns, the stitching, is what creates the uniqueness in each.

Quilting is fun for me - the challenge of designing one, the satisfaction of creating one, the excitement in choosing the fabric can be outrageous to traditional.

I have had the honor of creating a quilt for UniFem at the United Nations. Obtaining the quilting blocks made from the fabrics that were produced in each of the seventy-two different countries or so that participated was just amazing. The quilt is a tribute to the work being done for women around the world by the UN and other organizations. Presently the quilt is being re-hung in the newly designed UniFem offices at the United Nations.

The U Thant Memorial is in the process of being designed by his daughter. U (Mr.) Thant was the second President of the Security Council at the UN. He was from Siam, now known as Thailand. It was asked of me to make a quilt to be on display.

I am also working on a quilt that represents PEACE, words that express the meaning of peace. Once the Peace Institute in Washington DC is built PATH TO PEACE is to be laid on the floor outside the door of the conference room - PATH TO PEACE is as wide as it is so you can't walk around it and it is as long as it is so you can't step over it so when each attendee walks across it each will absorb the spirit of peace so that a peaceful resolution will come about to end the unrest.

I continue to sew, knit, crochet, do crewel work (needlepoint) for the pure enjoyment of creating useful art."

--Marilyn Cocking

Mrs. Cocking's work envelopes you with warmth, figuratively and literally. Each piece has a meaning as seen in "Dragon", a use as seen in the Christmas table runner and napkins, and some a sense of humor as seen in "Just When You Thought Everything Was In Order..." The colors, the fabric designs, the shapes - some with origami stars, and the quilting create that palette Mrs. Cocking speaks of. The balanced beauty of each does have a way of calling out to you -- "Come, let me envelope you with the warmth you seek." -- as she captures the mere essence of humanness with each creation - the feeling of warmth, the feeling of being safe, the feeling of being loved, the feeling of being healed all of which are welled up inside of us. Even though these are all physical feelings, they all surround the central core of each of us, our soul.

Her works have set many a fine table, adorn a dresser, covered little girls' baby dolls, have been worn by friends, family and complete strangers, and used as totes, and handbags. So many uses, and yet so many lives have been touched throughout the years.

Her missions to complete "Path to Peace" and U Thant's memorial are only the tip of the iceberg of her many plans, designs she has set out to create. And if only we can see them all...

Do visit SoBoBo during the month of October because Marilyn Cocking, October's Artist, will have her work on display from October 1st to October 31st. A must see!

You can meet Mrs. Cocking at her opening reception on Thursday, October 4th from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at SoBoBo Gallery, 42 Naugatuck Avenue, Milford. It will be a pleasure to see you!

The Tradewinds Bring Spencer Gordon to Sobobo...

"To me, Art is evolution. I have learned to embrace the concept that art creates the artist creating the art. By that I mean the more a person works; the more they hone their craft and focus on their true voice (so to speak) the more their work evolves and grows. The skills become more refined with each new idea and, in turn each new project grows and becomes more polished, intricate and interesting both to the one who created it and (hopefully) to whomever enjoys looking at it. This process, this growth is a beautiful evolution of both the artist and their craft, and one that I have enjoyed very much over the years that I have been following this passion of creativity. "

--Spencer Gordon

Spencer Gordon is a multi-faceted artisan. His experience during his visits to the islands has allowed the evolution of his work. The openness and expansiveness of the ocean's waters was a conduit for this connection he so eloquently accepted which brings to us his creations.  He is a wire sculptor and a jeweler - a metal smithy. This combination over laps that his creations are unique and quite sublime. How apropos for Sobobo!

While wearing his jewelry creations, hand tooled silver and copper bracelets, you can feel the energies emit from each piece.

A poetic rhythm as he explains:

"Life is meant for exploring, experiences and adventure. For me that adventure came with many trips to the islands scattered about the beautiful teal blue waters of the Caribbean. From Bermuda all the way down to St. Lucia I have been influenced, inspired and completely swept up by the beauty of these flecks of paradise and the people that call those soft, sandy beach trimmed dots of real estate their home. My jewelry is a direct result of the influence from my time spent down there. Every time I start a new design my mind drifts back to drinks with rum, moonlight dancing on the tips of the waves and a hammock perched perfectly between two coconut palms gently swaying in the tradewinds…."

One can actually feel the swaying back and forth of the hammock in the tradewinds...an evolving experience that continues has it washes over and blends with his wire sculptures, flowing, moving, forming human figures being born whether pulling himself out from a table, being sprayed from a fire extinguisher, pouring out of an oil can, oozing from a maple syrup spicket...and even the 180 degree opposite of birth...a figure "falling into" a cherry pitter head first!

Each sculpture is wire intertwining, weaving in and out to form a solid and yet hollow figure..."Incomplete" shows the angst, yet as he looks to the light one can see his struggle and determination to become complete even though he shows weakness as his heart bleeds. But in the end it is truly his strength as it holds him, supporting him, as he evolves into a whole. SUPERB! EVER EVOLVING! BEAUTIFUL!

"Pour Lost Soul" is in a sticky, oily situation at best as he tries to become who he is oozing out of a an oil can...You can see angelic wings formed on the wall as he fights to live or be taken elsewhere..But it doesn't matter...he is born.

And we can't forget "Extinguished Species" because one wonders if he is being extinguished or is he becoming distinguished by being sprayed into form? ...his face sculpted into a shape of perfection with that distinguished jaw like Kirk Douglas and Jay Leno! It's for you to decide!!
